  1. Hey Melanie!

I am a GPC and GPO member from Windsor Ontario and have recently returned from living in Japan for a year. I’m excited that you’ll have the chance to take part in some green-party related seminars there and I hope you enjoy your stay! I’ve always had an interest in the environment but it was actually my experience in Japan that made me really question the way things are done in our own part of the world.

I just stumbled upon a video of you at some sort of debate on youtube and you were speaking about public transportation needing more investment. I would strongly encourage you to look to Japan for a model of how cities can be literally built around public transit and pedestrian spaces rather than be built around the automobile. Unfortunately for most Canadians in medium sized cities, the knee-jerk reaction to a call for more use of public transit is painful memories of waiting for a bus for 20+ minutes in the cold or rain, etc. It might be good to explain in detail about how things are done in some other parts of the world where cars are truly optional because the transit system is so frequent and punctual that its a joy to ride.

The city I lived in for 6 months - Isesaki, Gunma - although small and rural (100,000 people), had multiple rail stations in it in and I was actually able to take a train to work everyday, something that hasn’t been a reality in that size of city in Canada for probably around a century.

Anyways, sorry to rant, I was just curious about who you were after seeing your debate, found your website, and am excited to hear you’re going to Japan! Please enjoy your stay!

  2. Wow I checked out your blog- looks like you had an amazing time !
Thank you so much for the note- I’m looking forward to speaking in Japan although I will have to offset my carbon for flying all the way there.
I will certainly check out the public transit; you speak of urban planning it with such understanding, I hope you put your knowledge to use in Windsor.
    Keep in touch !

There is no such thing. “Cool carbon” maybe you can “offset”.
Way up there, no way. It is probably the most disruptive of all for climate effect, if that is your major concern.

Do get maybe a bit more serious, even if it means a bit less of a happy face sometimes. In our difficult context, aviation is one more “weapon of war” that might have to be used just to keep up in an effort to reign it in. But we have not flown since the 70s, since first cluing in & getting that serious.

Mel! i just watched the clip of your interview in Japan. It was a beautiful thing. You can speak with such passion and dignity that it makes viewers feel an almost obligated feeling to make a change and help do their part to ensure our world is going to become ‘Green’.

I can tell you have what it takes to make major changes on the face of our planet an will be there to support your cause whenever you need!

Keep up all your hardwork, your begins to move mountains and your influence is getting easier and easier to notice. Keep in Touch
